Puppy school – a great start to life.
A well socialised and obedient dog is a pleasure to be around and can be taken anywhere at any time. Poorly socialised and untrained dogs can display all sorts of behavioural problems, be nervous, out of control, destructive and a nuisance to everyone. Because of their problematic behaviour towards other dogs and people they are often left alone at home or surrendered to animal shelters.
Thousands of dogs are destroyed each year due to behavioural problems. It is not so much irresponsible dog ownership to blame for this sad fact as the lack of know how! Many new dog owners are simply unaware of the problems that lie ahead of them and unfortunately have little or no idea how to prevent them. Although dog training has changed enormously in recent decades and despite available scientific evidence and research there is still a lot of confusion amongst dog owners. Many new puppy owners rely on misleading and in some cases downright wrong advice from well meaning people and out-of-date training books. Liarne cleans up the myths surrounding puppy parenting and emphasis on kind, positive approaches based on how dogs learn and what they like, therefore creating a trusting and fun relationship.
What does it cover?
The course runs for four weeks in a safe pleasant environment to socialise your pup with people and other dogs of similar age. Throughout the entire course Liarne points out calming signals your puppy uses when meeting new dogs, teaching you the language of your dog and how to work with it. This is of great importance as it helps your puppy learn how to behave with other dogs, people and children, but also teaches you what your dog is communicating.
Liarne uses positive reinforcement training which involves using food and praise to cover topics such as socialization, toilet training, chewing, handling, obedience training, grooming, exercise and play requirements. Never the less there is a big difference between a lure and a bribe and Liarne will cover how to phase out treats again so you don’t end up with a dog that only performs for a treat!
Liarne's research on street dogs in Greece will cover the background of your puppies natural behaviour, whey they do what they do. This will help you understand many of the behaviours displayed by your new puppy, such as barking, chewing, digging, resource guarding....... all puppies do it but there are effective ways to show them alternatives to this behaviour.
Because young puppies develop rapidly between 8 and 16 weeks of age (socialisation period and beginning of juvenile period), their temperament must be formed carefully and good behaviour patterns established properly during this time. If you want your dog to be a well adjusted and a happy member of the family, enrol your puppy now!
Liarne provides lecture notes and revision sheets for future reference
All family members are welcome to come along.
